Most heatmap screenshots you see in marketing blogs are fake. They're mockups. A blob of red slapped onto a landing page to sell you software.
Real heatmaps are messier — and more useful. They tell you where people stopped reading, which buttons they ignored, and why that "Contact Us" link you spent two meetings debating gets exactly zero clicks.
Here are the heatmap examples that actually matter, what they show, and how to read them without fooling yourself.
The click map: where people click vs. where you want them to
A click map overlays dots or a color gradient on every place visitors clicked during a session. Red = lots of clicks. Blue/green = few clicks. No color = dead zone.
Here's what a good click map looks like in the wild:
- Hero CTA: hot, as expected. Roughly 40–60% of clicks on a high-intent landing page should cluster here.
- Logo: warmer than you'd think. About 10–15% of users click the logo hoping to "go back home." If your logo doesn't link home, fix it today.
- Non-clickable text or images: clicked anyway. This is the signal most teams miss. If users are clicking a product screenshot that isn't a link, they expect it to be one. Either make it clickable or redesign it so it stops looking interactive.
A real example from one of our customers: their pricing page had a comparison table with a "Most Popular" badge. The badge was styled like a button. It wasn't a link. 8% of clicks on that page were landing on dead pixels.
That's not a minor UX quirk — that's a conversion leak.
The scroll map: where attention dies
Scroll maps show how far down the page people actually read. 100% of visitors see the top. By the fold, you've usually lost 20–30%. By the time you hit "frequently asked questions" at the bottom, you might have 15% of the original audience left.
The shocking pattern in almost every scroll map: the drop-off isn't gradual. It's a cliff.
Find the cliff. That's where your page is failing.
Usually it's:
- A dense paragraph right after the hero
- A feature grid that looks like every other feature grid
- A testimonial block that feels canned
- A secondary CTA that reads like a demand, not an invitation
Move your most important message above the cliff. Everything below it is basically invisible to 70% of your traffic.
The move map (mouse-tracking heatmap)
Mouse-tracking heatmaps show where the cursor hovers. There's a loose correlation between mouse position and eye position — not perfect, but useful on desktop.
Move maps are great for spotting:
- Hesitation on forms. If cursors hover over a field for 4+ seconds without typing, that field is confusing. Our data on form abandonment shows this is where most leads silently bail.
- Pricing page confusion. Cursors drifting back and forth between plan columns mean your differentiation isn't clear.
- Headline scanning patterns. An F-pattern hover trail means people are skimming. A scattered one means they're lost.
The confetti map: segmenting the noise
This is where most heatmap tools stop being useful — and where they should just be starting.
A raw heatmap averages everyone. Paid traffic, organic, returning users, mobile, desktop — all mashed together. A confetti map breaks the same clicks apart by segment: traffic source, device, new vs. returning, even UTM campaign.
Example: on an aggregate click map, your "Start Free Trial" button looked fine. But segment by traffic source and you see:
- Organic search: 12% click-through on the CTA.
- LinkedIn ads: 1.8% click-through.
The LinkedIn audience isn't converting because the page headline matches a search-intent query, not an ad-click intent. Different page, different headline — or at minimum, a different hero for that segment.
You can't see this in Google Analytics. GA4 never had a native heatmap (despite what the ranking articles claim — there was a Chrome extension called Page Analytics that Google quietly shelved). For behavioral context, you need a dedicated heatmap tool.
The replay-linked heatmap: the example most teams skip
A heatmap tells you what happened. A session replay tells you why.
The best workflow: find an anomaly in a heatmap — a rage-click cluster, a dead zone where a button should be performing — then watch 5–10 replays of sessions that touched that element.
Nine times out of ten, you'll see something the heatmap couldn't show you:
- A modal that fires too early and blocks the CTA
- A form field that flashes a validation error on every keystroke
- A mobile tap target that's 4 pixels too small
- A third-party script that delays the button from becoming interactive
This is the loop that separates teams who have heatmap software from teams who actually improve conversions. If your heatmap tool doesn't link directly to replays of the sessions that generated it, you're doing twice the work for half the insight. Tools like Hotjar, Microsoft Clarity, and CloseTrace all do this — but the quality of the linkage varies wildly.
The one heatmap example nobody talks about
Form-field heatmaps. Not clicks on the form — interaction time per field.
Which field took 22 seconds to fill out? Which one had three focus-blur cycles (the user clicked in, clicked out, and came back)? Which one is where 40% of sessions abandoned entirely?
Form analytics is where most revenue leaks hide, and it's the heatmap example that generic tools either ignore or bolt on as an afterthought. If you're running contact forms, demo requests, or signup flows, this is the heatmap to obsess over — not the pretty click map on your homepage.
A practical takeaway
Pick one page this week. Just one. Pull three heatmaps for it: a click map, a scroll map, and a form-field interaction map if it has a form. Look for:
- One dead zone where clicks are landing on non-clickable elements.
- One scroll cliff where attention drops more than 20 percentage points in a single section.
- One form field where time-on-field exceeds 15 seconds.
Fix those three things. Measure for two weeks. That's the entire game — not dashboards, not AI insights, not a 47-tab report. Three observations, three fixes, and the discipline to actually ship them.
