1. Starting without a specific question

"Let's look at the heatmap" is not a plan. It's a way to waste an afternoon.

Before you open a single heatmap, write down the exact question you want answered. Not "how do users engage with this page?" — that's too broad to act on. Try: "Do visitors scroll past the pricing table to see the FAQ section?" or "Is the hero CTA getting more clicks than the secondary nav CTA?"

Specific questions produce specific answers. Vague questions produce confirmation bias.

2. Mistaking clicks for engagement

A hot red zone means people clicked. It does not mean they were happy about it.

Rage clicks, dead clicks on non-interactive elements, and repeated clicks on broken UI all show up as "engagement" in a click heatmap. That glowing spot on your product image? Users might be trying to zoom in on something that isn't clickable.

5. Analyzing everyone as one blob

6. Confusing correlation with causation

The area near your testimonials is cold. Conversions are down 12%. Conclusion: move the testimonials.

Wrong. Maybe visitors who scroll that far already decided to convert and don't need social proof. Maybe the testimonials are below the fold for 80% of visitors. Maybe conversions dropped for reasons unrelated to that section at all.

Heatmaps surface patterns. They don't explain them. Before you ship a change based on a heatmap, validate with funnels to confirm the drop-off location, and watch replays to understand why users behaved that way. Then run an A/B test — heatmap evidence is a hypothesis, not proof.

7. Ignoring the cold zones

Teams obsess over red. The real insight is usually in the blue.

If your three-paragraph value proposition is getting zero attention on a scroll map, that's not a "nobody reads" problem — it's a "you wrote three paragraphs nobody needs to read" problem. Cold zones reveal what users don't value, what they skip, and what's wasting page real estate.
